Whatever its imperfections, cap-and-trade is a key component in addressing the environmental issues we are facing today. Financial incentives are a proven means of driving change and improvement in businesses. But in my opinion a focus on carbon alone is only an important first step. Bigger gains will come when sustainability is built into every aspect of the business and not treated as a separate project. A longer term, more holistic view of the organization can bring gains in efficiencies, waste reduction, and asset lifecycle optimization that can translate directly into reduced impact on the environment.
