That’s the average fuel economy of new vehicles purchased in the U.S. during the month of February, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. The good news: that’s a record for the highest fuel efficiency of newly purchased cars, just besting the figure from the month before. The bad news? 23.7 mpg is still extremely inefficient by global standards. And with gas prices at an average of $3.76 a gallon, it would cost still cost $2,135 to fill up a new vehicle with that gas mileage to drive the 13,476 miles the average American driver covers each year. That’s not impressive.
