VIDEO: Giant Iceberg Breaks Off Greenland Glacier

An enormous iceberg tore away from Greenland glacier on Monday. This incredible video shows how much the glacier has lost over the past few years

This Monday, July 16, 2012 satellite image provided by NASA shows calving, crescent-shaped crack at center, on the Petermann Glacier in northwestern Greenland. An iceberg twice the size of Manhattan tore off one of Greenland's largest glaciers. Scientists had been watching the 15-mile long crack in the floating ice shelf of the northerly Petermann Glacier for several years. On Monday NASA satellites showed it had broken completely, forming a 46 square mile iceberg. Petermann spawned an iceberg twice that size in 2010.

An ice chunk twice the size of Manhattan broke off of Greenland last week, in another sign of Arctic warming.

The 46-square-mile piece of the Petermann Glacier in Greenland “calved” away from the mainland on Monday. It tore along a crack in the glacier that researchers have been watching for years.

Another iceberg twice its size (i.e., four times the size of Manhattan) broke off the same glacier in 2010.

This striking video by New Scientist shows the damage Petermann has sustained over the past few years. A time-lapse gives a dramatic display of the earliest loss from the glacier (beginning in 2009).

That looks like it has to do with lowering tidal flows than anything else. If the tide drops and does not raise back up the same amount, then it would pull the ice out.


Great film. There is likely more to the pyramids than understood so far. The shape is that which will not cast a shadow at noon. The universe exists internalized in every human being or mankind couldn't find out anything about it. What becomes clear is that the ancient Egyptians who conceived of and built the pyramids experienced the unconscious function of the human mind with immense intensity. Hence the insights, at the apex, when both sides of the brain come together in their entirety, then the object function is alive; from it comes all insight. That is the true notion of a quantum leap, or what is known as the "gods": Zeus split the head of Gaia and from the split was born Uranus, namely the knowledge of the stars and the universe. Religion is not a ritual when it is genuine, but that coming together of the human intellect into universal insight. The ritual is how the real experience is described, not what it is. Maybe ancient man wasn't as primitive as we today think he was. He wasn't afraid of nature, and therefore not quite so religious in the western interpretation of that term. Nor is there necessarily so much secrecy in it all. The plan of the acropolis was presumably mortared into its innermost chamber, not to keep it out of reach, but to express that it was found in that innermost experience. It is what makes culture, what culture expresses.

Most of the connections found in the pyramids could be found in almost any of the great monuments and works of art, each showing an aspect of the effect the amplification has, each contributing that peoples' or person's insight. Much geometry has been found in the Acropolis, but a look at the sky will show its layout in a simpler way: there is no random order, any order man creates will reflect some aspect of the universe, in its forms and compositions. Because nature is internalized in man. One can only express what one has experienced. The difficulty is in making the unconscious conscious. It is what makes up the human genius. When it falls, it sinks into what is known as religion, a ritual without the insight. The rockets and space objects produced today are only the consequence of the same search, some 4000 years later, but inspired by the same knowledge. In another 4000 years a more advanced human kind will puzzle as much as to what the earthlings did with the space station as we puzzle what the Egyptians did with the pyramids. 

Monuments preserve the way stations, the stepping stones. The space station is our monument, added to the long sequence of ancient monuments.
