PHOTOS: Russia Meteor Explosion Shatters Windows, Injures Hundreds

In scenes that could have been from a Hollywood movie, a flaming meteor streaked across the sky and exploded over central Russia Friday, injuring some 1,000 people, according to Associated Press reports. The meteor, which struck near the town of Chelyabinsk some 1,500km (930 miles) east of Moscow, weighed about 10 tons and was moving as fast as 33,000 mph.

The meteor released several kilotons of energy above the region and was probably about 2 meters (6 ½ feet) across, Richard Binzel, a professor of Planetary Science at MIT told the AP.  The shock wave blew in more than 1 million square feet of glass, according to city officials, who said 3,000 buildings in Chelyabinsk were damaged.

The meteor hit less than a day before Asteroid 2012 DA14 is set to make the closest recorded pass of an asteroid to the Earth — about 28,000 km (17,150 miles). But the European Space Agency said its experts had determined there was no connection between the two.

Dear Editor,

I live in the United States. The photographs on the article were really good and clearly showed the effects and power that a meteor can carry. A map pinpointing the location would also be helpful.

This meteor strike in Russia could have a profound effect on the atmosphere. Only the future will be able to determine the effects of this meteor. A meteor strike of this magnitude is something I consider very important in the world’s history.

The Chelyabinsk meteor arrives almost on the same day as 2012 DA14? More interestingly, before DA14 makes it's closest pass? Not only that, but the biggest since Tunguska 1908? That, plus it passes booming over a city and falls in a field? (nobody killed). There is more here than meets the eye, folks. NASA had a year to build up the arrival of DA14: NASA looking all excited: "Oh boy, an NEA we can really get our teeth into! Now we can have the (gullible) public adoring us: "....Oh look how valuable we are, we are alerting you to a killer asteroid, NOT!" All this, in hopes of propping up their crappy reputation.
So what happens? Chelyabinsk upstages NASA. Regardless of what you believe, most would probably agree, that NASA was upstaged, but why, what is behind the scenes on this one?
My blog post explains.

To whom we should blame? Global warming, inhumane killings, gay rights, abortion rights, pill after the nights, Church sex scandals or the hidden skeletons of the POPE BENEDICT, WHO RESIGNED ABRUPTLY?
