Window on Infinity: Pictures from Space
A comet closes in for a Holiday rendezvous with Earth, while new stars are born in the Elephant Trunk Nebula, and the coldest place in the universe shows its face. In other words, just another month in space.

This flat-topped mesa is located in the center of Hebes Chasma on Mars. Exposed within the walls of the mesa are layers of sediments deposited by wind and water. Reading the sediment layers is the equivalent of reading the Martian past, with each stratum telling a tale about the conditions at the time it was deposited. In geological terms, Hebes Chasma is a fragile structure, as evidenced by a large landslide that dominates the right side of this image.
