Often mistaken for the biblical pests—not least because both species can make a heck of a racket—cicadas are actually quite different from locusts. Aside from squishing beneath your shoes, cicadas aren’t really pests at all—unlike some species of desert locusts, which can destroy whole crops in a sudden swarm of hungry insects.
