"or tar sands, as environmentalists call it"  Actually Bryan, "tar sands" is the correct term because bitumen is not oil. The industry, as well as the U.S. government, has called it "tar sands" for decades.  It wasn't until the Canadian government set out to re-brand it "oil sands" that the term 'oil sands' entered the lexicon. To this day, the U.S. Department of Energy calls it tar sands, and that is the most accurate term. http://ostseis.anl.gov/guide/tarsands/index.cfm

On the other hand, Exxon referred to it as "garbage crude" because of its extremely low quality, as Steve Coll revealed in his book, Private Empire.
