If humans are suckers for animals with big eyes (and we are), we ought to swoon over the new species of night monkey discovered in the jungles of Peru. Weighing about 2 lbs. (.9 kg) and standing just over 1 ft. (.3 m) tall, night monkeys are usually hard to find, hard to count and hard to see even when they’re right in front of you. That’s mostly because they are nocturnal, and are missing the one giveaway for many animals that stir in the dark—their reflective eye-shine (think cats). So finding a new species is a very big thing, but does come at a high price. To capture and study the representative of the species found this year, scientists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico had to clear roughly 100 ft. (30 m) of forest floor around the tree that is the monkey’s home.
